बहुत रुपया खर्च किया, पर हिन्दी के प्रवीण पाठकों ने उनके पत्र की बहुत कम क़दर की। पण्डितजी एक पत्र में लिखते हैं---
My father left me no great fortune, nor my luck is over-fond of me. What little I can earn is hardly sufficient for my own family, which is by no means small. I conduct the paper at a very heavy loss (one year's loss amounting to over Rs. 800) and this is, in a sense, injustice to my family, who have stronger claims on me than the magazine. Yet I do what I can for the love of knowledge and glory of my country. I have sacrificed my health, my money, my time and, if, still the king does not like the dish, woe to the goat which has lost its life !
अर्थात्----न हमारे कोई मौरूसी जायदाद है, न हम ख़ुद ही भाग्यवान् हैं। जो कुछ थोड़ा सा हमे मिलता है हमारे ही बाल-बच्चों के लिए काफ़ी नही। कुटुम्ब भी हमारा छोटा नही। "कवि व चित्रकार" को चलाने मे हमे बहुत नुक़सान उठाना पड़ता है। गत वर्ष हम ८०० रुपये से भी अधिक के घाटे में रहे! यह हमने मानो अपने कुटुम्ब पर जुल्म किया--अन्याय किया। "कवि व चित्रकार" की अपेक्षा अपने कुटुम्बियों की ज़रूरतों को रफ़ा करना हमारा पहला काम है। पत्र की अपेक्षा कुटुम्ब का हक़ अधिक है। तिस पर भी
