र्थियों को पराकाष्ठा का आनन्द होता था और विवेचित विषय उनके हृत्पटल में तत्काल अङ्कित सा हो जाता था।
इस प्रकार १२ वर्ष-पर्यन्त अपनी अपूर्व अध्यापन-शक्ति से महाराष्ट्र-देश को उत्तम शिक्षा प्रदान करके अकाल ही में वामनराव ने परलोक के लिए प्रस्थान कर दिया। ९ अगस्त १८९२ को, अर्थात् केवल ३४ वर्ष के वय में, वे अल्पायु हो गये। महाराष्ट्र-देश का एक अलौकिक रत्न खो गया। संस्कृत का अनन्यभक्त सर्वदा के लिए तिरोहित हो गया। उनकी मृत्यु से उनके मित्र-मण्डल और छात्र-वर्ग को ही नहीं, किन्तु महाराष्ट्र देश भर को असह्य दुःख हुआ। जस्टिस तैलङ्ग, डाक्टर भाण्डारकर, तथा डेकन-कालेज और एल्फ़िन्स्टन्-कालेज के प्रिन्सपल ने भी बहुत शोक प्रकट किया। यहाँ तक कि बम्बई के गवर्नर, लार्ड हैरिस, तक ने उनके गुणों की प्रशंसा करके खेद प्रदर्शित किया[१]।

Death has been busy here in the city and cantonments this last month; and amongst those whom you have to mourn, none, I fancy, has passed away with more sincere and deeper feelings of regret than Mr. Apte. I beg very respectfully to join with you in those feelings. I know what Mr. Apte was doing for education here. I know what a labour of love it has been to him to extend the efforts of educational association with which he was connected, and how successful that labour has been. We can illspare such enthusiasts, but we must bor before the greater Wisdom of the Almighty. I name Mr. Apte in connection with that doctrine of self-help which I am taking the liberty to inculcate, because I believe him to be a notable instance of a man raising himself to the highest level in his own line by the unaided determination of his character and his self-confidence in lhis power to succeed.
