1928. Page : 173.] The work in the poetical Hindi language that is by far in greatest repute here is the Ramayan of Tulsidas, who is said to have been 'a Saraswat Brahman of Kasi. This work is unintelligible to by far the greater part of those who read it. Even pandits, who have not made it a peculiar study, cannot compre- hend its meaning. This is said to be owing to the author's besides Sanskrit having intro- duced words from most of the more remarkable dialects spoken in India; just as if a man were to.compose a poem in a mixture of Greek,
