The above does not, of course, pretend to be a complete grammar, is only meant to show the spelling of the principal forms. It The metre of the poem consists of stanzas of seven caupāīs followed by a dūhā. In the latter, a mātrā is frequently omitted in the first half. In the caupāīs, accent is frequently used instead of quantity, a short accented syl- lable being treated as a long one, especially at the end of a line. Malik Muḥammad wrote long before Kēçava-dāsa laid down the canons of Hindi metre. Such accented short syllables we have marked, in transliteration with an acute accent, thus,-niramárē (2, 3).
