दूसरे मराठा युद्ध का प्रारम्भ इसके बाद सींधिया को नाश करने के इस नए बहाने को कप मिलता चला गया। धीरे धीरे यहाँ तक कहा मराठों के साथ जाने लगा कि सींधिया के राज्य में जममा के युद्ध करने में तट पर फ्रासीसियों की एक बाज़ाब्ता बस्ती अंगरेज़ों का वास्तविक है जिसमें कप्तान पैरों के अधीन चौदह हज़ार उद्देश सशस्त्र फ्रांसीसी सेना रहती है। पूर्वोक पत्र के एक महीना बाद गवनर जनरल ने जनरल लेक को एक अत्यन्त महत्वपूर्ण पत्र लिखा जिसका और अधिक ज़िक किसी दूसरे स्थान पर किया जायगा । इस पत्र में मार्किस वेल्सली ने लिखा:- --- -- -- consistently with a due attention to the period of the season, and to the tacility of moving your army, and of prosecuting hostihties with the advantages which you now possess " In this event, or in other state of circumstances which may appear to you to require hostilities, Idirect you to use your utmost efforts to destroy the military power of either or of both chiefs (Scindhra and Raja of Berar) . It is particularly desirable that you should destroy Scindbha's artillery, and all arms of European construction, and all mahtary stores which he may possess the actual seizure of the person ot the Scundhra, or of Raghoji Bhonsla, would be highly desirable, . . . In the event of hostilities, you will take proper measures for withdrawing the European Officers from the Service of Scindhia, Holkar and of every other chief opposed to you “You are at liberty to incur any expense requisite for this service, and to employ such emmissaries as may appear most serviceable . . . .
