जसवन्तराव होलकर "साम्र ही आप अपने मददगारों को पका रखने और पिछले साल के एलानों को दोहरा कर अथवा दूसरे लोभ देकर होलकर की सेना के भादमियों को अपनी ओर मिलाने के लिए हर तरह प्रयत्न करें।"* जसवन्तराव के विरुद्ध उसके आदमियों और अन्य नरेशों को • अपनी ओर मिलाने के लिए अब जी तोड़ होलकर के विरुद्ध कोशिश की जाने लगीं । इन कोशिशों से नई साज़िशें - जसपतराव की सेना में अंगरेज़ों को कहाँ तक सफलता प्राप्त हो रही थी, इसका कुछ अनुमान गवरनर जनरल के नाम लेक के २२ सितम्बर सन् १८०४ के पत्र से लग सकता है। इस पत्र में लेक ने लिखा:- ____ "होलकर की सेनाओं की अजीब हालत है, उनमें से कुछ फिर हमारी ओर चले पाने के लिए कह रहे हैं। यदि वे पाएँगे तो उन्हें ले लिया जायगा। -- - -- . .- -- - ----- ---- ----- • "We must endeavour rather to retrieve than to blame what is past, and under your auspices I entertairl no doubt of success Time, however, 1s the main consideration Every hour that shall be left to this plunderer will be marked by some calamity , we must expect ageneral defection of the allies, and even confusion in our own territones, unless we attack Holkar's main force immediately with decisive success . . . I perfectly agree with you that the first object must be the defeat of Holkar's Infantry in the field, and to take his guns, Holkar defeated, all alarm and danger will in- stantly vanish, manusion othi " You will also take every step for confirming our allies, and for encouraging desertion from Holkar by renewing the proclamations of last year, or by othor encouragements "-Governor General's letter to General Lake, alth September, 1804 ४८
