भारतीय उद्योग धन्धों का सर्वनाश ६१५ पूछा गया कि क्या हिन्दोस्तानी पहले बिलकुल शराब नहीं पीत थे ? उसने जवाब दिया-मैं समझता हूँ, कि बहुत ही कम । पूछा गया-क्या शराब पीना उनके धर्म के विरुद्ध नहीं है ? जवाब मिला-मुझे नहीं मालूम कि उनके धर्म के विरुद्ध है या नहीं, किन्तु उनकी आदतों के विरुद्ध अवश्य है ; वे खुले तौर पर शराब नहीं पीत। किन्तु जब कभी पीते हैं तो उनका पीना धर्म के विरुद्ध हो या न हो उनके यहाँ के सामाजिक रिवाज के विरुद्ध अवश्य होता है ।"* दूसरे अंगरेज़ गवाहों ने भी बड़े हर्ष के साथ बयान किया कि यूरोपियनों के संसर्ग से भारतवासियों में शराब पीने की आदत और यूरोप के ऐश आराम के और अन्य दिखावटो सामान खरीदने
