author of thers worke, written by Babu Rama Saandara Vyasoi. The ancestors of the author of this work were very rich and much respected, holding high positions at Delhi and Gour Royal Durbars. They first settled in Gour (Lakhanouti in Bengal) and then at Rfjmahal and Murshidabad. His great-grand-father Bobu Fatehchanda Sahu came,to Benares and resided there. He had nine brothers, three of them were entitled Rajas3one Ray Bahadur and the rest Babus ; but only his great-grand-father hnd issue. He rendered very good services to the British Gov- ernment and greatly assisted the Judicial authorities in the dis- charge of their duties. Mr. Duncan was much obliged to him for his valuable services during the Permanent Settlement. Babu Ha- ralchachanda was the only son of Babu Fatehchanda and the only heir to such an illustrious family of ten brothers. He was so po- pular in the country that his name 's still sung in the family songs, lavanis, shair, ets. His hame is well known. in India as a famous Mahajan and man of generosity. Babu Gopalchandra was Babu Harakhachand's only son. He died at the early age of 27, and in the same short period he wrote forty works in Hindi and Sanskrit. He named himself Giridharadasa. in his works. He left two sons, the cider of these two is our eminent author and the younger Babu Gokulachanda. Our author was born on the 9th September 1850 A. D. His mother died when he was 5 years old and his revered father left him totally an orphan at the age of 9. He was educated in the Queen's College, Benares, for a few years but the thorough iknowledge which he gained of Sanskrit, Persian and Bengali, was the result of his private study
