16 परमार्थसोपान CHAPTER IV 7 [Part II In this chapter we will discuss the beginnings of the spiritual pilgrimage as found in the Dohas. We shall begin by considering the nature and function of the spiritual teacher in the scheme of the realisation of God. Next, we shall proceed to two important topics. First, we shall discuss the method by which the spiri- tual teacher instructs us to begin and perfect our endeavour for God-realisation. This, of course, is medi- tation by the Name which the teacher communicates to us from a high spiritual altitude, from which it must descend and be conduited in the minds of his disciples. Second, we shall discuss the power that lies in this Name, and the function it performs in the spiritual development of the disciple. Afterwards, we shall discuss four important requi- sites for the perfection of this methodology, namely, what physical, mental, moral and mystical requisites are essential for this perfection. Finally, that inner spring of devotion, that long- ing for self-realisation, that passionate attachment to the spiritual ideal, without which we can never rise to the sublime heights of mystic realisation, will be discussed briefly with refererence to the Dohas.
