६४ भारत में अंगरेजी राज सन् १८०१ में एक स्वतन्त्र अंगरेज़ आततायी जॉर्ज टॉमस कुछ कहेला पठान सवारों की सेना जमा करके प्रायः सिक्खों के इलाकों में लूट मार किया करता था। जब कि मार्किस वेल्सली भारत के अन्य नरेशों को सबलीहीयरी सन्धियों के जाल में फंसाने की पूरी कोशिश कर रहा था, उसी समय सिक्खों को उसने जान बूझ कर खासा आज़ाद छोड़ रक्खा था। इसी में उस समय अंगरेज़ों का हित था। मार्किस वेल्सली की चाल ठोक और सफल साबित हुई। मराठों के साथ इस दूसरे युद्ध के समय सिक्ख सरदारों और राजाओं ने अंगरेजी का यथेष्ट साथ दिया, और बहुत दर्जे तक उस सङ्कट में मराठों के विरुद्ध अंगरेज़ों का साथ देने "Such of those chhettains as are subject to the control and exactions of the Maratha Power, may perhaps be detached from the interests of that nation by promises of protection from the British Government, and of exemption from the payment of tnbute in future. "It it should appear impracticable to obtain the co-operation of those chieftains, it would still be an object of importance to secure their neutrahty. "In your communications to the Sikh chieftains it may be proper that Your Excellency should suggest to their consideration the danger to which they will hereafter be exposed by any opposition to the interests ot the British Government, and the advantages which they may derive from a connection with so powerful a state.
