साम्राज्य विस्तार कुल्य और हर सरक से उसके अधिकार परिमित कर दिए गए, सावंत यह कि सिवाय हिन्दोस्तान के बादशाह की उपाधि के और सब स्वय, सला और अधिकार सम्राट से श्रीन लिए गए, और यह सब बारह बार माखाना की शानदार (!) पेन्शन के बदले में।" जनरल लेक ने करमत्व अॉक्टरलोनी को दिल्ली में कम्पनी का रेजिडेण्ट और वहाँ की सेनाओं का प्रधान करमल सेनापति नियुक्त किया, और उसके मातहत एक प्रॉक्टरलोनी पलटन और चार कम्पनियाँ देशी पैदल और एक पलटन मेवातियों को दिल्ली की रक्षा के लिए छोड़ दी। इस ऑक्टरलोनो की एक विशेषता यह थी कि वह दिल्ली में मुसलमानी ढङ्ग से रहता था, मुसलमानी पोशाक पहनता था, अनेक मुसलमान तवायफ़े रक्खे हुए था, और दिल्ली भर की तवायफ़ों और महल के खोजों के जरिए शहर और दरबार की सब खबरें रखता था। सींधिया के उन यूरोपियन अफसरों में से अनेक जो अंगरेजों से
