असली चीज समझनेके लिये मैं जो निरंतर प्रयत्न कर रही हूँ, उससे जो कुछ मुझे सूझा है वह आपके सामने रख देनेके लिझे ही लिख रही हूँ।" असे बापूने जवाब दिया: "I understand and appreciate all you say about yourself. Let me put you at rest. When I come out you shall certainly be with me and resume your original work of personal servicc. I quite clearly see that it is the only way for your self-expression. I shall no longer be guilty as I have been before of thwarting you in any way whatsoever. My only consolation in thinking over the past is that in all I did, I was guided by nothing else than the deepest love for you and regard for your well-being. I see once more that good government is no substitute for self-government. A Gujarati proverb says, what one sees for oneself may not be visible to the nearest friend though he may have ever so powerul a searchlight. Both these proverbs may not be universally applicable. They certainly are in your case. You need there- fore fear no interference from me henceforth. And who can give me more loving service than you?": " तूने अपने लिमे जो कुछ लिखा है वह मैं समझ सकता हूँ और असकी कदर करता हूँ । अक मामलेमें मैं तुझे निश्चिन्त कर ही हूँ। मेरे जेलसे निकलनेके बाद जरूर तू मेरे साथ ही रहेगी और मेरी सेवाका अपना असल काम फिर शुरू कर देगी । मैं साफ़ देख सकता हूँ कि तेरी आत्माके आविर्भावके लिओ यद्दी अंक मार्ग है । पहले मैंने असा किया है, मगर अब अपनी सेवाके कामसे तुझे वंचित रखनेका अपराध मैं नहीं करूंगा । भूतकालमें जो कुछ हुआ है असका विचार करता हूँ, तब मुझे अक बड़ा सन्तोष यह रहता है कि मैंने तेरे प्रति जो कुछ :किया है वह तेरे लिो गहरे प्रेम और तेरे भलेकी भावनासे प्रेरित होकर किया है। मगर में देख सकता कि 'स्वराज'का काम 'सुराज्य' नहीं दे सकता । अक गुजराती कहावत कि 'धणीने मुझे ढांकगीमा ने पड़ोसीने न सूझे आरसीमां'। ये दोनों कहावतें सब जगह लागू नहीं की जा सकतीं । हाँ, तेरे मामलेमें तो दोनों ही अच्छी तरह लागू होती हैं । अिसलिमे आयंदा मेरी तरफसे कोमी दखल नहीं दिया जायगा, यह पूरा भरोसा रखना । और मेरी सेवा तुझसे ज्यादा प्रेमके साथ कौन कर सकता है ?" ८५
