Mathura a very old manuscript dated 1590 A D. (No. 68 of 1900), and on the basis of it as well as three others already known good manuscripts, the Nagari Pracharini Sabha has commenced to publish a trustworthy edition of the hitherto much disputed text, the preparation of which as in the experienced hands of Mr. Shyam Sundar Das, Pt Mohanlal Vishnulal Pandya and Babu Radha Krishna Das This much needed work, which, in spite of its lengthiness, it may be hoped will be carried to a successful conclusion The genuineness of the chronical, once unhesitatingly accepted, was first denied by Kaviraj Shyamal Das in 1886 in an article contributed to the journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal and has since remained greatly suspect on the ground mainly of the incorrectness of its dates In his report for 1900, Mr. Shyam Sundar Das made an attempt, As it appears, successfully, to rehabilitate the ancient chronicle. The clue to it discovered by Pt. Mohanlal Vishnulal Pandya, is furnished by the chronicle itself In his first canto, Chand Bardai explains that his dates are not stated in the ordinary Vikram era, but in a modification of it adopted by Prithiviraj and called the Anand Vikram era.
