पेशवा को फांसने के प्रयल सुरक्षित समझने लगता है तो फिर उसकी सावधानी और जागरुकता में ढीलापन भाने लगता है। जिस तरह की सन्धि का प्रस्ताव किया जा रहा है, उसका एक परिणाम यह भी होगा कि पूना का दरबार मराठा साम्राज्य के दूसरे सदस्यों से फूट जायगा, जिससे ब्रिटिश सत्ता के उपर पेशवा की पराधीनता और भी अधिक वेग के साथ बढ़ती जायगी।" और आगे चलकर इस पत्र में लिखा है- "यदि हमने पेशवा के साथ इस तरह की सन्धि कर ली तो फिर समस्त मराठा राज्यों के मापस में मिल जाने की सम्भावना जाती रहेगी, xxx मराठा साम्राज्य की किसी एक शाखा के साथ इस तरह का पृथक सम्बन्ध कायम कर लेने से न केवल हमारी स्थिति ही अधिक मजबूत हो जायगी, बल्कि इससे धीरे धीरे एक ऐसी विकट परिस्थिति पैदा हो जायगी जिससे मजबूर होकर उस साम्राज्य के अन्तर्गत दूसरे राज्यों को भी हमारे साथ इसी तरह की सन्धि स्वीकार करनी पड़ेगी।"* • " The measure of subsidizing a British torce, even under the limita- tions which the Peshwa has annexed to that proposal, must immediately place him in some degree in a state of dependence upon the British Power, .
