६५८ भारत में अंगरेजी राज आधा समान देने या न देने को मैं इतने अधिक महत्व की बात नहीं समझता। "मेरी प्रार्थना है कि आप इस विषय पर हर पहलू से सोच लें।xx x जब तक प्रापका जवाब न पाएगा मैं भापको इस विषय में खुला पत्र न विखंगा।"* वास्तव में घेल्सली पेशवा को धोखा दे रहा था, वह निश्चय कर चुका था कि पेशवा को एक कौड़ी भी अहमदनगर की मालगुज़ारी में से न दी जायगी। किन्तु उसे इस बात का डर था कि कहीं पेशवा मौका पाकर पूना से न निकल जाय अथवा अंगरेजों के साथ युद्ध का एलान न कर दे और दक्खिन के जागीरदार अंगरेजों के विरुद्ध पेशवा की मदद के लिए खड़े न हो जायें क्योंकि इन जागीरदारों को भी अंगरेज अनेक बार धोखा दे चुके थे। इसी लिए पेशवा को खुश रखना ज़रूरी था । मैसूर की सरहद पर जनरल स्टुअर्ट के अधीन जो सेना रक्खी गई थी, • " Since writing to you yesterday, it has occured to me that it would be better not to hold out to the Peshwa any promise or prospect of having halt the revenue of Ahmadnagar, but to tell him generally that the revenues shall be applied to pay the expenses of the war, and that the accounts of them shall be communicated to him One great object, however, 1s to reconcile his mind to our keeping possession of the country, which is absolutely necessary for our communications with Poona , and provided that is effected, I think it immaterial whether he has half the revenues or not "I beg you to turn this subject over in your mind, .
