७६० भारत में अंगरेजी राज गवरनर जनरल के जिस पत्र का ऊपर जिक्र किया गया है उसमें लिखा है :- “गवरनर जनरल ने नागपुर के रेज़िडेण्ट के नाम यह आदेश भेज देना उचित समझा कि नागपुर के राजा की काररवाई के विषय में अंगरेज़ सरकार को जो कुछ खबर मिली है उसकी सूचना उचित अवसर पाकर बिलकुल सुल्ने तरीके पर राजा को दे दो और यह कह दो कि गवरनर जनरल भाव- श्यक समझता है कि बिना पाप ( राजा ) की ओर से किसी जवाब का इन्तज़ार किए आपके आक्रमण को रोकने और आपको इस विश्वासघात का दण्ड देने के उद्देश से तैयारियां शुरू कर दे;xxx गवरनर जनरल ने यह निश्चय कर लिया कि जिस रियासत में ईमानदारी के प्रत्येक प्रसूल की इतनी कमी है उसके विरुद्ध कम्पनी की समस्त शक्ति और सामर्थ्य से काम लिया जाय, और जब तक कि राजा पूरी तरह से परास्त न हो जाय, सब तक रुका न जाय ।"* जनरल लेक और मार्किस वेल्सली दोनों के अनेक पत्रों से प्रकट है कि जनरल मॉनसन की पराजयों के बाद ही उन्होंने यह निश्चय • "The Governor-General deemed it expedient to issue instructions to the Resident at Nagpore, directing him to take a proper opportunity of apprizing the Raja of Berar in the most public manner of the information which the British Goverment had received with regard to his proceeding that the Governor General had deemed it necessary, without awaiting any explanation, to make prepartory arrangements for the eventual purpose ot repelling aggression and punishing treachery on the part of the Raja, . . The Governor General resolved to call forth the whole power and resources of the Company against a state so devoid of every principle of good faith, and tot to desist, until the Government of the Raja should have been effectually reduced"
