परिशिष्ट SYSTEM OF SENTIMENTS Love-maternal. Disinterested action, disinterested character through object and end, not through particular nature of emotion. Two broadly contrasted types,(1) the instinct of solf preservation (2) preservation of race. Although in feeding the young, mother satisfies her own impulse also, but her impulse is disinterested. So her sorrow is disinterested when it has disinterested instinct. Pity is not therefore the source of the disinterestedness as popularly supposed. Love and Hate are not single emotions. Spencer ennumerates among constituents of sexual love or sexual instinct, affection, admiration, pleasure of possession etc., etc., But love is not a compound feeling but system under which different feelings and emotions are organised. Love of opposite sex and offspring innote, all other love acquired. Sentiments vary much more from one man to another than emotion.' Through sentiments men rise to more self-controlled systems-in them are resolutions formed. The most prominent are (1) Self love which
