हिन्दी संसार ने सूरदास जी और गोस्वामी जी के बाद का स्थान कविवर केशवदास जी को ही दिया है। मैं भी इसी विचार का हूं।

   उनको 'उडुगन' कहा गया है ।यदि वे उडुगन हैं तो प्रभात कालिक शुक्र (कवि) के समान प्रभा-विकीर्णकारी हैं । कविकर्म शिक्षाकी पूर्ण ज्योति रीति काल के प्रभात काल में केशवदासजीसे ही हिन्दी संसार को मिली। सब बातों पर विचार करने से यह स्वीकार करना पड़ता है कि साहित्य सम्बन्धी समस्त अंगों की पूर्ति पहले पहल केशव दास जी ने ही की। इनके पहले कुछ विद्वानों ने रीति ग्रन्थों की रचना का सूत्रपात किया था किन्तु यह कार्य केशवदास जी की प्रतिभा से ही पूर्णता को प्राप्त हुआ। इतिहास बतलाता है कि आदि में कृपाराम ने ही 'हित-तरंगिणी' नामक रस-ग्रन्थ की रचना की। इनका काल सोलहवीं शताब्दी का पूर्वाद्ध है।

इन्होंने अपने ग्रन्थ में अपने समय के पहले के कुछ सुकवियों की कुछ रचनाओं की भी चर्चा की है । किन्तु वे ग्रन्थ अप्राप्य हैं। ग्रन्थकारों के नाम तक का पता नहीं मिलता। इन्हीं के समसामयिक गोप नामक कवि और मोहन लाल मिश्र थे। इनमें से गोप नामक कवि ने, रामभूषण और
